THE ARCHITECT OF THE METHOD

Three decades. 7,000 learners. One insight — and one new technology to complete the method.
In 1995, a woman named Anne-Marie ran the private language division at the University of Leuven in Belgium. Her hiring interviews were legendary — most applicants came out shaken. She wasn't testing grammar knowledge or teaching credentials. She was testing for one specific quality: the ability to stay inside a constrained semantic space. To loop around simple vocabulary and context without jumping to the next association. To dwell, not roam.

The interview lasted ten minutes. When I came out, the other candidates gathered outside were surprised I wasn't rattled. Most had found her dismissive, even brutal. I had found her fascinating. She hired me that afternoon.

Anne-Marie worked with senior executives at organizations like Interbrew,  Swift, and the European Union. No textbooks. No grammar exercises. No meta-language. Just carefully constrained, repetitive conversation — designed to activate unconscious pattern recognition rather than conscious memorization. The same process by which every human being on earth learned their native language.

She passed away in 1997. But the insight lived on.

What followed was three decades of evolution—including five years away from the classroom, teaching philosophy at the University of British Columbia, which gave me the exact psychological frameworks I needed to decode how the adult brain processes language.  

The result is 25 years of active, rigorous linguistic engineering to build the complete machine Anne-Marie had glimpsed.
